WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY - 10 OCTOBER 2019
World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year. The day is observed with an aim to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world. It also aims to mobilize efforts in support of mental health. The Day aims to provide an opportunity for all organizations, NGOs and stakeholders who work on mental health issues to discuss and promote their work to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.
Theme:
The theme for World Mental Health Day 2019 is Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention. According to WHO data, around 8 lakh people die by suicide every year. It also showed that a large number of suicides can be prevented if people get timely and adequate treatment for mental health disorders.
In India:
Around 2.2 lakh people in India commit suicide every year. India has the highest suicide rate in South-East Asia. In India, Maharashtra state reported high suicide rate.
Suicide is preventable. To prevent suicide, the government should take steps like, providing psychological first aid training to medical staff and first responders and increase government funding for suicide prevention programmes. Mental health literacy should be improved among people.
History:
World Mental Health Day was initiated by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) in 1992. WFMH established that day with an objective to raise awareness about mental health conditions from depression to suicide around the world.
World Mental Health Day 2019 is supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Association for Suicide Prevention, and United for Global Mental Health.
